Miss America! (and Mario Lopez Smells Good) (1/31/09)

It’s hard to believe that a week ago Katie Stam, Miss Indiana 2008, was crowned Miss America 2009. She’s already doing an amazing job and I’m so proud to call her one of my Miss America sisters. I had such a phenomenally positive experience at Miss America and am so thankful to have had the opportunity to, not only compete on the Miss America stage, but also to be able to spend three weeks with my fellow contestants while filming Countdown to the Crown. Sam Haskell, Chairman of the Board, attests that our class is his all-time favorite and I can definitely see why!

I’ve written and deleted paragraph after paragraph of mushy reflection and I’ve decided, in true Katie fashion, to “keep it real”. I had a great time at Miss America, sure, I was disappointed about not making Top 15, but was more disappointed that everyone in the audience and everyone watching on TV didn’t get to hear Illinois called! I have no regrets about what I put on that stage and set out and accomplished my number one goal – to do my best. Thank YOU for all of your support during this wonderful journey and I cannot wait to see what the next five months as Miss Illinois bring!

A few highlights:

- Mario Lopez smells amazing. While my interaction with him was limited, I did have the pleasure of knowing when he was near due to the beautiful aroma that wafted around him.

- I rock at arcade basketball. During one of our outings to the Pole Position Raceway, I played, and beat, every contestant that went up against me, our security guard Louis, and one of the owners (From Buffalo Grove!) of the raceway. My triumph actually made the paper and people were challenging me to play them all week!

- Loved the opening number, Phantom of the Opera, the Spice Market Buffet (breakfast, lunch and dinner!), our amazing hostesses, Norm from Vegas Confidential and his piece on me and Miss DC!, Planet Hollywood, sunshine, and my wonderful friends, family, and pageant family for their support.

Looking forward to the months to come!
